3 ways I work as an international remote medical writer

3 ways I work as a remote medical writer in Germany, with companies in other countries

1. Use a HR company in Germany where I live

Oyster® HR set up my contract in Germany, and the company was Oyster HR’s “client” that I worked for.

Other HR companies that do this include BambooHR and Deel

2. Sign a contract with a recruiter

The recruiter finds clients who want to work with me, and they give me a timesheet to fill in every month. Then I get paid through the recruitment company straight to my bank account.

3. Freelance contracts

With freelance clients, I sign a contract and create a German freelancer invoice (with no VAT for certain countries). My accountant reviews it before I send it out. The client pays into my bank account.

Then I file my taxes by October each year to pay tax for my previous year’s earnings. (In Germany, the tax year runs from January to December, unlike the UK which is April to April.)

4. Freelance platforms

Freelance platforms like Upwork, Freelancer.com or YunoJuno often have their own contract systems, and they take a cut of your pay before you receive the rest in straight into your bank account or an online payment platform like Wise, PayPal, Monzo or Revolut.

Update 29th August 2023: Freelancer platform YunoJuno clarified in the comments below they don’t take a cut of your freelancer pay.
